The yurt built for stillness and storytelling

The dream

Andrew and Karen wanted more than a structure, they were creating a place for creative transformation.

Tucked into the bushland in north NSW, their 10m yurt was imagined as a space where authors, coaches, and creatives could disconnect from noise and reconnect with their ideas.

Where are you at with your yurt project?

Frequently asked questions

Choosing the right yurt

Can you help me work out if this is right for my retreat or wellness space?

Yes. That is exactly the kind of conversation we like to have early.

A retreat or wellness yurt needs to feel good, but it also needs to work practically: enough open floor space, the right light, good airflow, easy access, a considered arrival moment, and a layout that supports the way you run sessions, workshops or guest experiences.

We can help you think through the size, window and door placement, orientation, base, site flow and how the yurt will actually be used once people are inside it.

Bring us your ideas, your land details or even a rough sketch, and we’ll help you work out whether a Beyond Yurt makes sense for your space.

Where are your yurts made?

Our yurts are made by experienced Mongolian yurt tradespeople with deep knowledge of traditional yurt construction. Made near the China-Mongolian border, then shipped to customers across Australia and New Zealand.

Beyond Yurt is based in Victoria, Australia, and our team works closely with the manufacturing facility to refine the design, improve details and keep quality front of mind. Because we’re also involved in real customer projects on the ground, we’re constantly feeding practical learnings back into the way our yurts are designed and built.

The result is a yurt that draws on traditional building knowledge, with design improvements shaped by how people actually use them for glamping, retreats, studios and guest experiences.

What's the difference between a yurt and a geo dome?

Geo domes and yurts can both work beautifully for glamping, retreats and nature-based guest stays, but they create a very different kind of experience.

A geo dome has a more futuristic, dramatic look. That can work well if you want a bold visual statement.

A yurt feels warmer, more natural and more grounded in the landscape. The timber frame, soft interior light and connection to the outdoors create the kind of space people want to slow down in, whether it is for a retreat, guest stay, studio or wellness experience.

At Beyond Yurt, our yurts use solid wood frames, using Canadian Western Red Cedar for the framing of our doors and real glass windows. That means the space feels less like a temporary structure and more like a considered, premium guest experience.

For glamping and retreat use, yurts also have a few practical advantages:

  • They have a softer, more natural feel than many metal-framed structures.
  • They suit eco-conscious guests who are looking for something grounded, beautiful and close to nature.
  • They can usually be assembled faster than more complex builds, once the site and base are ready.
Why choose Beyond Yurt?

Beyond Yurt focuses exclusively on premium yurts designed for long-term use in Australian and New Zealand conditions.

What makes us different is the combination of higher-grade materials, thoughtful design, and hands-on support throughout the process.

Our yurts use premium Canadian Western Red Cedar rather than cheaper treated pine commonly used elsewhere, along with one of the thickest outer covers available in Australia (900 GSM) for improved durability, insulation and weather protection.

We also help owners think beyond the structure itself. Whether you’re creating a retreat, Airbnb, studio or guest space, we can guide you on layout decisions, guest experience, setup ideas and creating a space that performs well long term.

From planning and sizing through to setup and post-build support, you’ll work with a dedicated yurt specialist the entire way.

The result is a premium yurt experience built for comfort, durability and real-world use — without the inflated markup often associated with high-end alternatives.

What size yurt do I need?

The right yurt size depends on how you want the space to feel, function and flow.

A smaller yurt can work beautifully for a cosy guest stay, creative studio or quiet retreat space. Larger yurts give you more flexibility for group retreats, workshops, wellness sessions, shared guest accommodation or a more premium flagship stay.

The best place to start is with the experience you want to create: how many people will use the space, whether it needs furniture, beds, movement space, treatment areas, storage, bathrooms or separate zones.

Our team can talk you through the size options and help you choose a yurt that suits your land, your plans and the way people will actually use the space.

Can you help me choose the best layout for my land?

Yes. This is one of the most important parts of getting your yurt right.

We can help you think through where the yurt should sit, which views to frame, where the morning and afternoon light comes from, how guests will arrive, how doors and windows affect airflow, and how the space will connect to decks, bathrooms, paths or outdoor areas.

Small layout decisions can change the whole feel of the finished space. A well-placed View Framer Window, a better door position, or a smarter orientation can make the yurt feel more natural, premium and connected to the land.

Bring us your site details, photos, rough plans or ideas, and we’ll help you shape a setup that makes sense

Can I customise colours and features?

Yes. Every Beyond Yurt can be customised with interior and exterior colour options, plus your choice of doors and windows across all yurt sizes.

This is where your yurt starts to feel made for your land. You can use View Framer Windows (our big curved glass windows) to capture a standout view, the Floor-to-Ceiling Windows to bring in more light, opening windows and doors for fresh air, or French Doors and Premium Combo Door to create a grander entrance.

Every site is different, so we help you adapt your yurt to suit your vision, location and intended use. That might mean shaping the space around a view, the morning light, guest flow, airflow, or the way you want people to arrive and move through the space.

Our team can talk you through the options and help you choose the setup that makes the most sense for your land, guest experience and project goals.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. Beyond Yurt currently ships across Australia and New Zealand, and we can also arrange international shipping for customers further afield.

Tell us where you are based and what you are planning, and our team can talk you through what is possible for your location.

Do you offer financing options?

We do not currently offer financing, but all orders are split into two payments.

You pay a 50% deposit to begin your order, then the remaining 50% before your yurt is dispatched from the build factory. The standard timeframe between the deposit and final balance is around 30–40 days.

This payment structure applies to all orders, including custom orders, international orders and seasonal offers.

What is included in the price?

Your yurt kit includes the core components needed to assemble your Beyond Yurt.

This includes the full yurt structure, frame, external cover, interior lining, selected windows and doors, and woollen insulation system as standard.

What is not included is your platform. Every yurt needs a suitable base prepared before installation. You can organise this independently, or speak with our team about your base options, including our fully insulated modular base, or our builder network in Australia and New Zealand.

Shipping to major Australian and New Zealand ports is included in the price. This covers delivery to the main ports of Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Auckland and Christchurch.

Final delivery from the port to your site is not included in the standard price. We can arrange this for you at an additional cost.

Can I see a yurt before purchasing?

Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to understand what makes a Beyond Yurt feel so different.

We’re have a growing network of Beyond Yurt customers across Australia and New Zealand who host guests in their yurts through short-stay platforms and retreat stays - they would love to welcome a booking. Staying in one gives you the chance to experience the space properly: the light, the timber, the real glass windows and doors, the atmosphere, and the way a yurt feels once you’re actually inside it.

It’s also a great way to see how others are using their yurt for glamping, retreats and guest experiences.

Ask our team what stays may be available near you, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

How long does delivery take?

Most Beyond Yurt orders take around 90 days from the deposit-paid to yurt kit arrival on site in Australia, or New Zealand.

If you’re working toward a specific opening date, retreat season or project timeline, let us know early. We’ll talk you through what is realistic and see how closely we can align your order with your plans.

What should I prepare before my yurt arrives?

The main thing to prepare while we are building your order, is the platform for your yurt to sit on.

You should also think through site access, where the kit will be unloaded or stored, who will help with assembly, what tools you’ll need, and whether you want trades involved for the base or setup.

If your yurt is for glamping, retreats or guest stays, it’s also worth planning the surrounding experience early: decks, paths, bathroom access, outdoor seating, views, lighting and arrival flow.

We’ll provide guides and support so you can prepare properly before delivery day.

Can you hold my order until my site is ready?

Yes. If your site is not quite ready yet, we build your order and delay shipping till the site is ready.

Do you ship to rural or remote properties?

Yes. Most Beyond Yurt customers are based on rural, regional or remote properties, so this is a normal part of what we help plan. We’ve even gone 4x4’ing high up in the mountains to visit some sites.

Tell us where you are based, and we can help work through the best delivery path for your property.

Setup and installation

How difficult is it to set up the yurt?

Most customers find the yurt assembly itself straightforward, especially with the right number of people on hand.

As a guide, smaller yurts usually need 2–4 people, while larger yurts are easier with 6–8 people. Installation generally takes around 2–4 days, depending on the size of your yurt, your site and how prepared you are before assembly begins.

You do not need specialised building skills to assemble the yurt structure itself. The main part that does require some practical know-how is the platform or base, which needs basic carpentry skills and should be prepared properly before your yurt goes up.

We provide detailed guides, videos and phone support, so you are not left figuring it out from scratch. We’re also an easy phone call away and would be happy to connect with your builder/chippy if they need anything at all.

What foundation or platform do I need?

Your yurt needs a level, stable platform that is properly suited to your site and yurt size.

The most common options are timber bases or decks, which are popular because they work well with the look and feel of a yurt. Some customers also use concrete slabs, depending on their site, access and intended use.

The right option depends on your land, slope, soil, drainage, access and how you plan to use the space. If you are not sure where to start, hit the "MAP OUT MY YURT" button above on this page and we can walk you through the best base direction for your project.

What tools are required for assembling a Yurt?

You do not need highly specialised tools to assemble the yurt structure, but you will need a solid basic toolkit.

This usually includes a drill or impact driver with bits, socket set and spanners, tape measure, spirit level, hammer, heavy duty stapler, sharp scissors, pencil or marker, silicone sealant and caulking gun, plus a ladder or scaffold depending on the yurt size.

If you are installing flooring, you may also need a circular saw or suitable cutting tool.

Your instruction manual includes a detailed tool list for your specific yurt, so you can get everything ready before installation day.

How long does installation usually take?

For a first-time assembly, most yurts take around 2–4 days to install. Experienced builders may be able to complete the yurt assembly in 1–2 days, depending on the yurt size, site and preparation.

The main thing to plan for is the platform or foundation. That part usually takes longer than the yurt assembly itself, so it is worth getting your base sorted properly before installation day.

Once the platform is ready and your kit is on site, the yurt structure can come together surprisingly quickly.

Do I need a builder to assemble my yurt?

Not necessarily. Many customers assemble the yurt structure themselves with a small group of capable helpers, especially if they are comfortable with hands-on projects.

The yurt structure itself does not require specialised building skills, and we provide detailed guides, videos and phone support to help you through the process.

The part where a builder or carpenter can be useful is the platform or foundation. Your yurt needs a level, stable base before it goes up, and getting that right makes the whole installation much smoother.

So while you may not need a builder for the yurt itself, it can be worth bringing in trade help for the base, site preparation or full setup if you would rather have experienced hands involved.

Do you provide installation services?

We do not currently provide installation services directly.

However, we do have a network of trades across Australia and New Zealand who may be able to help with your yurt setup, depending on your location, timing and project needs.

If you would like help finding someone for the installation, let our team know. We can talk through what support may be available near you and help point you in the right direction.

Comfort, durability and weather

What wind ratings do your yurts have?

Our yurts are designed with a circular form, which helps wind move around the structure rather than pushing against flat walls.

As a general guide, our yurts are rated to handle winds up to 120 km/h, provided they are installed correctly and suited to the site conditions. They are not cyclone-rated, and severe weather damage is not covered under standard warranty terms.

Because every property is different, we recommend talking with our team about your site, especially if you are in a high-wind, exposed, coastal or cyclone-prone area. We can help you understand what to consider before you choose your yurt location and setup.

How long do yurts last?

With the right care and maintenance, the main yurt frame, can last a long time. No reason it wouldn't last 15-20 years+. As this part of the yurt is not exposed to the elements.

The outer cover is the part that usually needs attention first. As a general guide, yurt covers (if high grade thick GSM) can last around 7–9 years before they may need replacing, depending on your climate, site exposure and how well the yurt is maintained.

We offer all Beyond Yurt customers lifetime access to replacement covers for just cost plus shipping.

This makes replacement covers very affordable for all our customers. Even if you just want a colour change, no problem at all.

Are yurts suitable for year-round use?

Yes. Beyond Yurts are designed for year-round use across the seasons.

Every yurt includes 8mm woollen insulation as standard, along with ventilation through the included Double Glass Door and Floor-to-Ceiling Window. For colder climates, double insulation is available to order across all yurt sizes.

You can also customise your setup for your climate and site. That might mean allowing for a potbelly fire in cooler regions, or adding more windows and doors to support airflow in warmer locations.

Comfort will always depend on your location, site exposure, orientation and how you plan to use the space, but our team can talk you through the best setup for your land, climate and project goals.

What warranty do you offer?

Every Beyond Yurt comes with a 6-year structural warranty on key frame components - that’s double the industry average.

We offer that because we back the way our yurts are built: solid timber frames, real glass windows and doors, and a structure designed for proper long-term use across glamping, wellness retreat and guest accommodation settings.

The warranty covers manufacturing defects and material faults under normal use. It does not cover general wear and tear, extreme weather damage, misuse, neglect, improper setup or unauthorised modifications to the yurt kit.

How do I maintain my yurt?

Yurts are fairly low maintenance overall, but a little regular care goes a long way.

We generally recommend giving the outer cover a good clean once or twice a year, and keeping the canvas clear of leaves, branches and debris. It is also worth checking the silicone or caulking from installation now and then, just to make sure everything is still sealed and looking good.

Your local climate and site conditions will make a difference. A yurt under trees, near the coast or in a damp area may need a little more attention than one in a more open, dry location.

Can I purchase replacement parts separately?

Yes. We stock replacement components for Beyond Yurts, including covers, windows, doors and frame parts.

So if something wears out, gets damaged, or needs replacing down the track, you can reach out to our team and we’ll help you work out the right part for your yurt.

It is part of making sure your yurt can keep working beautifully for years to come.

If we need to we can even build replacement parts as needed.

How do yurts perform in extreme weather?

Yurts are naturally well-suited to wind because of their round shape. Instead of wind pushing against flat walls, the circular design helps it move around the structure.

When properly installed and secured, Beyond Yurts are designed to handle typical Australian and New Zealand weather conditions, including high winds, heavy rain and seasonal temperature changes.

That said, they are not cyclone-rated and are not recommended for cyclone-prone areas during cyclone season. Snow load capacity can also vary depending on the yurt size, so it is worth speaking with our team if you are planning a build in an alpine or snow-prone location.

If your site is exposed, coastal, high-wind, bushfire-prone or snow-prone, get in touch early. We can talk through your location and help you understand what to consider before you choose your setup.

How do yurts handle mould, damp or condensation?

Our yurts are built with mould resistance in mind from the ground up. The outer cover uses a UV-treated, weatherproof fabric that resists moisture absorption, and the structural canvas layers are treated to prevent mould taking hold, so you're starting from a strong base before you've even thought about airflow.

Every Beyond Yurt also comes standard with a Double Glass Door and Floor-to-Ceiling Window, which means ventilation is built in from day one. For wetter, coastal or heavily shaded sites, you can add extra opening windows or doors to keep air moving through freely.

Like any structure that lives outdoors, a little routine care goes a long way, keeping the outer cover clear of leaf litter and debris and letting the yurt breathe after extended wet periods will keep it in great shape for years.

Mould is rarely an issue in our yurts when they're set up and maintained sensibly. If you're in a particularly challenging climate and want to talk through the best setup for your site, we're happy to help.

What happens when the outer cover needs replacing?

The outer cover is the part that usually needs attention first. As a general guide, yurt covers (if high grade thick GSM) can last around 7–9 years before they may need replacing, depending on your climate, site exposure and how well the yurt is maintained.

We offer all Beyond Yurt customers lifetime access to replacement covers for just cost plus shipping.

This makes replacement covers very affordable for all our customers. Even if you just want a colour change, no problem at all.

Planning, approvals and site considerations

What about council approvals?

Council requirements for yurts vary depending on your location, council area, intended use, and site setup — so there is no single universal answer.

That said, many buyers successfully navigate the approval process, and the approach you take makes a real difference. We have worked with customers across Australia using yurts for glamping, retreats, guest stays, studios, and nature-based accommodation, and we are happy to share what we have learned about approaching council clearly and practically.

A few things worth knowing before you start:

  • The platform or deck often matters as much as the yurt itself. Even where a yurt is treated more lightly, the base it sits on can have its own approval considerations.
  • Intended use shapes the conversation. A studio or retreat space is often treated differently from short-stay accommodation or a permanent residential home. Getting the framing right from the start helps.
  • Rural and off-grid properties typically have more flexibility, though it still pays to confirm with your local council before you commit.
  • Our yurts are not designed or positioned as permanent residential homes under Australian Building Standards, which is relevant context for how councils may classify them.

If you are unsure where to start, get in touch and we can share more about what the approval conversation typically looks like and help you think through the right questions to ask your local council.

Are yurts bushfire rated?

Our yurts are not BAL-rated, so bushfire requirements need to be considered carefully if your property is in a bushfire-prone area.

That does not automatically rule out a yurt project. We have had customers work through approvals in bushfire-prone locations, but it usually means there are extra site, placement and safety requirements to consider.

Your local council or relevant authority will be the one to confirm what applies to your property. We can help you understand what questions to ask and share what we have learned from other customers who have gone through this process and gotten approval.
